ABOUT
Professor, Department of Islam and Middle Eastern Studies, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Completed his Ph.D. at Tel-Aviv University in Middle East studies (1991) and post-Doctorate at Cornell University in the USA (1992-93). Main fields of interests: Egypt, inter-Arab relations, Arab-Israeli conflict; education and culture in the Middle East.
Served as the Chair of the Department of Islam and Middle East Studies during the years 2004-2009; and editor of The New East (Hamizrah Hehadash) – the Hebrew journal of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Association of Israel (MEISAI) – during the years 2000-2008. Senior research fellow at the Harry S. Truman Institute for the advancement of Peace. Frequent commentator in the Israeli daily Ha'aretz and various media channels.
Published and edited some eight books and more than sixty articles on the modern Middle East in leading academic journals. Last major publication is The Politics of National Celebrations in the Arab World by Cambridge University Press (2011). Recently finished a manuscript on Missed Opportunities in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
