In the Fall of 2021, I completed an MA in Islamic Law from Islamic College London accredited by Middlesex University. In addition, I hold an MA in History from The University of Texas at Austin as well as an MA in Humanities from The University of Texas at Dallas. My background in Arabic and literary analysis enables me to engage with the arts and letters of different cultural groups (rather than merely through political, national, or ethnic categories) to find points of creativity, collaboration, and interdependence.
My training in history focuses on the medieval and early modern encounter between Western and Islamic thought. My primary interest is human rights history, particularly relating the story of Muslims’ struggles for protections and freedoms, in order to correct many misconceptions in the traditional narrative about Islam, its values, and its adherents. To that end, I have just completed an MA dissertation (Nov 2021) on the origins of human rights in the medieval era.
