ABOUT
Caner Yelbasi is an Assistant Professor at the Mardin Artuklu University. He holds a PhD degree from the Department of History in SOAS, University of London. The title of his thesis is 'Civil War, Violence and Nationality from Empire to Nation State: The Circassians in Turkey (1918-1938).' In his thesis, he focused on the political and paramilitary activities of the Circassian community in Turkey in the very late Ottoman and early Republican periods. His research interests are Circassian Studies, Late Ottoman Period, Nation and Nation State ideology, Para-militarism, and Early Turkish Republican Period.
Caner Yelbasi also completed his MA on the Near and Middle Eastern Studies in SOAS, University of London in 2012. In his master thesis, he compared treatments of a non-Turkish Muslim group, namely the Circassians, in the Late Ottoman and Early Republican Period by the state authority in 1908-1950 periods.
