ABOUT
My research interests are interdisciplinary and informed by Intercultural Communication (communication dynamics of difference based on religious, historical, and political values), Global Communication (issues of global media/globally-mediated communication in diverse cultural, economic, political or social contexts), and Islamic Studies (study of the diverse range of lived experiences and textual traditions of Muslims as they are articulated in various countries and regions throughout the world). Specifically, using rhetorical, critical, and interpretive approaches, I explore a) the multi-vocal discursive practices of Islamic/Muslim communities; b) the rhetorical dynamics and deliberative capacity of Muslim communities in marginalized contexts; and c) the role of new media and deliberation in the cultural-political transformation of Arab and Middle Eastern societies. In addition, due to the global/international emphasis of my work, I use my research and pedagogical experiences to publish scholarship that contributes to the internationalization of the Communication discipline.
Through my research, I aim to a) break stereotypes and challenge reductive ascriptions of Islam/Muslims; b) facilitate civic engagement and social justice efforts in the context of Muslim minority populations; and c) shape public policy. My overarching goal is also to lay a non-West/U.S. focused terrain for Communication Studies.
