ABOUT
Shafeeq Ghabra is a Professor of Political Science at Kuwait University (1987-present). Ghabra was the founding president of the American University of Kuwait 2003-2006. Ghabra directed the Center of Strategic and Future Studies at Kuwait University from September 2002 to January 2003. From 1998 to 2002 he has been the Director of the Kuwait Information office in Washington DC. From 1996 to 1999 he was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of The Social Sciences at Kuwait University. Dr. Ghabra produced and anchored; from Oct 2006-January 2008 a weekly talk show on Kuwait TV (The weekly Diwaniya). Ghabra writes weekly columns is a frequent writer to Alhayat daily and Middle East Transparent, and his columns are syndicated in several regional newspapers. He serves presently as Kuwait University Chair of the Consulting Committee for Faculty promotions and Appointments in the Humanities, Arts, Business, and Social Sciences. Ghabra earned his PhD in Government in May 1987 from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his MA in Political Science from Purdue University in Indiana in 1983, and his BA in Government from Georgetown University in Washington, DC in 1975. Author of Seven books and scores of articles and papers, Dr. Ghabra has received Kuwait's highest award for scientific research in the Humanities and Social Sciences from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, chaired by the former Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah. His volume (Arabic) is entitled Israel and the Arabs: From the Conflict of Issues to the Peace of Interests (1997). His book: Kuwait: a study of the dynamics of state and society (Arabic, 1995) was unique in its approach to Arab democracy. Tow recent studies appeared for Ghabra “Studying the American Way: An Assessment of American-Style Higher Education in Arab Countries” (with Margreet Arnold). Washington, D.C the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Policy Focus #71, 2007. Also published: “Kuwait and the United states” in the Middle East and the United States. (2007) Ed. David Lech. A second expanded and updated addition of Kuwait: a study of the dynamics of state and society Kuwait: published Summer 2011, Afaq books in Kuwait. Ghabra’s book (a personal narrative) that explains the Arab world between 1960’s 1980’s published in Arabic by Al-Saqi books in Beirut, December 2012. The book title: Unsafe life:: The generation of dreams and disappointments.
