ABOUT
Relli Shechter is a Professor in the Department of Middle East Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. Trained as an economic historian, he earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His recent books include The Egyptian Social Contract: A History of State-Middle Class Relations (Edinburgh University Press, 2023) and The Rise of the Egyptian Middle Class: Socio-Economic Mobility and Public Discontent from Nasser to Sadat (Cambridge University Press, 2018). His current book project, “Social Contracts in the New Societies of the Middle East: A Socio-Historical Study of Political Pacts, 1945-1967”, explores how and why these pacts shaped regional politics.
