Stephen Cory (PhD in Islamic History, UCSB, 2002) holds a joint appointment as a professor in the Departments of History and Philosophy/Comparative Religion at Cleveland State University. His specialty is the history and religion of the Islamic Middle East and North Africa. His research focuses upon the use of religious imagery for political legitimization and upon the development of Hispano-Maghribi civilization in North Africa following the conquest of Islamic Spain during the late medieval and early modern periods. Dr. Cory spent two years conducting research in Morocco (with funding from Fulbright and Fulbright Hays fellowships) and has presented his research at a number of scholarly meetings, including the Middle East Studies Association and the World Congress of Middle East Studies. He returned to Morocco with his family during Spring semester 2006 on a teaching/research Fulbright fellowship, where he taught History as a visiting professor at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane. He has also conducted research in Spain on several occasions. Dr. Cory spent the 2014/15 and the 2019/20 school years in Amman Jordan on Fulbright teaching grants, where he taught for the Program for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World in the School of Shari`a at the University of Jordan. Dr. Cory's book, Reviving the Islamic Caliphate in Early Modern Morocco, was published by Ashgate press in 2013. His current research focuses upon the eighteenth century Moroccan sultan Muhammad ibn `Abd Allah (Muhammad III).
