ABOUT
Sarah Fischer's research interests include the relationship between women and secularism, female politicians' and public figures' use of and representation in media, and the European Court of Human Rights' treatment of veiled Muslim women. Her dissertation, "Democratization, Modernization, and the Veil: the Relationship between Secularism and Women in Contemporary Turkey" (2013), which involved interviews with over 150 women, found a link between the discrimination veiled women face and their political participation and ideology.
Fischer lived in Turkey for a number of years. She is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, including a Boren Fellowship, two Critical Language Scholarships, and an American Research Institute of Turkey (ARIT) Grant.
