Biography: Professor Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem is Chair of Architecture at the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University. He is the Founding Director of the University’s Global Centre for Heritage Research. Professor Abdelmonem has led international consortia and research partnerships involved in the studies of Architectural, urban and cultural heritage that involved several American, British, European and Middle Eastern Universities, governments, research centres and cultural institutions. He acted as a Visiting professor at prestigious Universities, including Royal Academy of Arts in London and the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Abdelmonem’s research focuses on the investigation of socio-spatial practice of urban environments, the architecture of home, spatial memory, politics of urban space in everyday life, Digital Urban Heritage, Digital Modelling and the Pedagogy of Architectural Studio. He received the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE) Biennale’s Jeffrey Cook Award (2014) for his scholarly research on traditional urban environments. Prof. Abdelmonem’s research has been globally published, with his recent books include ‘Peripheries: Edge Conditions in Architecture’ (Routledge 2012), “Portrush: Architecture for the North Irish Coast” (Ulster Tatler 2013), “The Architecture of Home in Cairo: Social-spatial practice of the Hawari’s everyday life” (Routledge, 2015; HB, 2016) and the forthcoming title “Architecture, Space and Memory of Resurrection in Northern Ireland” (Routledge 2018). Dr. Abdelmonem sits on several international conferences and editorial boards and has published numerous articles on socio-spatial architecture, urban development, Middle Eastern urbanism, and spatial memory in post-conflict Belfast. He has practiced architecture on the global level for over 20 years with his designs features across Africa, Asia and Europe. He also led design studios and Architecture Courses at Queen’s University Belfast, University of Wolverhampton and taught design studio and architecture theory at Sheffield School of Architecture, where he completed his PhD in Architecture. Professor Abdelmonem advises several governments and international organisations in Ireland, Egypt and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on aspects of sustainable heritage preservation, urban planning and design. Professor Abdelmonem has led several International Consortium on research projects funded by The European Union, European Research Council (FP7), The Government of the Republic of Ireland, Japan Foundation, Research Councils UK (RCUK), including the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
