ABOUT
Elif Mahir Metinsoy (1981) is post-doctoral researcher at Istanbul University, Department of Political Science and International Relations. She received her B.A. from Bo?aziçi University, Department of Political Science and International Relations and her first MA from Bo?aziçi University, Atatürk Institute of Modern Turkish History. After having a second MA degree from Strasbourg University (Université March Bloch before 2009), Department of Turkish Studies in 2006, she received her PhD degree in 2012 from Bo?aziçi University and Strasbourg University with her dissertation titled “Poor Ottoman Turkish Women during World War I: Women’s Experiences and Politics in Everyday Life, 1914-1923.” This study is awarded the “Doctoral Dissertation Award” by Bo?aziçi University Scientific Research Fund in 2013. She has several articles and book chapters on Ottoman social history and women’s history as well as her books Mütareke Dönemi ?stanbulu’nda Moda ve Kad?n, 1918-1923 (Fashion and Women in the Istanbul of the Armistice Period, 1918-1923) (Istanbul: Libra Books, 2014) and Ottoman Women during World War I: Everyday Experiences, Politics, and Conflict (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2017). Her academic interests also include ordinary women’s everyday experience of World War I and their everyday responses to wartime living conditions and state policies, women’s movement, especially women’s periodicals and associations during the Second Constitutional period, the representation of Ottoman women in art, literature, and press, including the Ottoman humor press between 1908 and 1923, and Turkish etiquette rules of the interwar period. She carried out post-doctoral research at Middle East Technical University, Department of History between 2013 and 2015. From spring 2016 to fall 2017 she gave lectures on gender and women’s history and on everyday politics in the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic at Galatasaray University.
