ABOUT
My interest in the modern Middle East was sparked when I went to AUB as a third-year undergraduate with the aim of spending time in Lebanon studying archaeology. By the end of that academic year I had developed what has turned out to be a lifelong interest in the region's modern history. I returned to AUB for an MA (awarded 1981), and then went on to do a Ph.D. at Georgetown University including doctoral research in Damascus. My research areas have remained focused on Syria and Lebanon. At the University of Toronto since 1987 I have taught modern Middle East surveys and more focused upper-year courses on the modern history of the Arab world.
