ABOUT
Lara Balaa is a doctoral student at the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Her main research focuses on the early modern Latin-Arabic textbook as a cultural encounter between Europe and the Arab world. She also researches contemporary visual culture in Lebanon, and is the author of the volume ‘Emile Menhem: Invigorating Arab Journalism Through Graphic Design’ (2019) in Khatt Books’ Arabic Design Library series. Prior to joining Rutgers University in 2018, Lara was a practicing editorial designer and a lecturer at the Beirut Arab University in Lebanon, where she taught history and theory of visual communication, typography, and design studio courses.
