El-Sayed el-Aswad is a former professor of anthropology and Chair of Department of Sociology at United Arab Emirates University. He has previously taught at Tanta University (Egypt), Wayne State University (US)and Bahrain University. He received his doctorate degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has been awarded fellowships from various institutes including the Fulbright Program, Ford Foundation, Egyptian government, and United Arab Emirates. He is a member of Editorial Advisory Boards of Digest of Middle East Studies (DOMES) and Muslims in Global Societies Series, Co-editor of CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East and contributing editor: Tabsir: Insight on Islam and the Middle East. He is a member of the American Anthropological Association and the Middle Eastern Studies of North America and has published widely in both Arabic and English. Prof el-Aswad teaches across the range of levels, from the Social Studies undergraduate program to the taught Doctorate in Philosophy (Anthropology and Sociology) where she also supervises PhD students.
