ABOUT
Laila Mourad is a PhD candidate at York University. Her work adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the international development, political economy, and gender studies fields. Laila’s research interests are related to alternative economies, everyday forms of resistance, as well as the localization of development. Her approach is informed by non-mainstream knowledge production practices and critical pedagogy, specifically auto-ethnography and narratives of memory. Recently, she has been focusing on exploring how informal economies of food in Egypt present potential opportunities for, and barriers to, sustainable development and gender equity. Through her current project, Laila aims to analyze the potential of informal economies as sites of transformative social relations for disrupting gender norms and redefining women’s agency through everyday acts of resistance. In her personal life, she is passionate about exploring the cultural and social dimensions of food. Laila trains and competes in kickboxing, as a means for cultivating resilience and wellness.
