Abstract
As senior Kurdish scholars with long memories, we propose to comment about the earlier stages of Kurdish Studies dating back to the 1940s-1970s. Among many others, this earlier period included such scholars as the Bedirkhan brothers, Wadie Jwaideh, Ismet Cheriff Vanly, Dana Adams Schmidt, Vera Beaudin Saeedpour, and Joyce Blau, among numerous others. The two authors were all personally acquainted with these earlier Kurdish scholars and are thus in an excellent position to comment upon their many contributions to the field. This earlier period not only followed upon yet previous periods dating back to the 19 th and early 20 th centuries, but also served to adumbrate today’s burgeoning field of new, more broadly based Kurdish scholars. This joint paper will discuss specific personalities, areas of interest, and problems that constituted Kurdish Studies during the 1940s-1970s. It will be based on the specific experiences and knowledge of the two elderly presenters. As such, this joint paper will provide a useful basis upon which more recent Kurdish Studies can be analyzed and understood.
