?Umar II and the Championing of the Medina School
Abstract
There are a number of reforms that are associated with ?Umar II that have been seen by many scholars as setting him apart from the rest of the Umayyads. Some of these reforms outlasted him, such as the stopping of the cursing of AlA while others died with him, such as his fiscal reforms vis-i-vis the maw las. Yet, one of the most important changes that Umar II instituted which not only outlasted him but also had a huge impact on Islamic civilization is his championing of the Medina School over and above any other. This paper will look why oUmar II's fiqh was preserved. We will argue that it was his championing of the Medina school that made him a suitable model for the piety minded.
